Since January 2007 the MADIS Sober House has been providing safe and sober living accommodations for men in recovery. From the first twelve (12) bed residence, MADIS House has grown to four (4) locations providing a total of forty-eight (48) available beds. The facilities are located within less than a ¼ mile radius from one another and are within walking distance from the Waterbury Brass Mill Mall. The houses are either on bus line or situated in close proximity to public transportation.
The MADIS House is the only DMHAS-approved Sober House in Waterbury, Connecticut.
The goals and objectives of the MADIS House program are:
- Provide transitional recovery housing for men to enhance recovery success and reduce substance abuse treatment recidivism
- Provide a supportive recovery environment while clients secure permanent housing and employment
- Reduce the risk of relapse by utilizing a person-centered, strengths-based approach
- Promote the active participation of the individual to strengthen recovery skills and foster independent living
- Promote community integration and increase the individual’s overall health and wellness
- Provide a culturally competent and respectful transitional recovery housing environment
The MADIS House is non-bias and non-discriminatory. Discrimination by management or residents is not tolerated. Residents are encouraged to explore their culture diversifies, however, the MADIS House stresses that recovery crosses all cultural differences. An individual regardless of cultural/ethnic/racial heritage is supported in their effort to restore or develop a positive and meaningful sense of identity apart from one’s addiction or condition and then rebuilding one’s life despite, within the limitations imposed by that addiction or condition.
The MADIS House program is person-centered and encourages family involvement. An effective orientation program allows each client to comfortably assimilate into the program. Through increasing levels of responsibility and trust, and witnessing growth and positive examples of recovery, the client experiences an increased level of hope and empowerment. Self-evaluations via case management assisted wellness surveys and active participation in a 12-step recovery program, provides the client with a roadmap to recovery.
Peer-to-peer counseling offers a wealth of opportunity; however, through effective case management, an individual’s recovery is enhanced. Our clients are also encouraged to get involved in the local recovery community; resources are provided as a catalyst. Waterbury offers a multitude of recovery and social service based support. MADIS House personnel collaborate with treatment providers and other community-based organizations to assist residents in identifying and securing the support services that are conducive to their recovery. During the client’s Recovery Planning, a course of action is jointly developed by the client and Case Manager to best serve the individual’s recovery. Case management staff will also assist residents to identify and secure employment and permanent housing so they may ultimately transition into the community. Close proximity to the Waterbury Brass Mill Mall and the MADIS House owners’ involvement with the Waterbury building and remodeling industry, opens additional employment opportunities to the clients. The owners of the MADIS House also own several rental properties that frequently become available to tenants that are ready for independent living.
